Grocery Store Wars: Where Kroger Stands

Back to Insights

August 25, 2022

In its most recent financial report, Walmart gained market share during the second quarter. Analysts question though, whether Walmart’s gains are at the expense of the largest operator of traditional grocery stores, locally-based Kroger. Both stores are reportedly adding to market share as shoppers leave high end retailers in search of lower priced products. Our Jim Russel told Cincinnati Business Courier reporter Steve Watkins he expects Kroger to remain strong.

“We view Kroger as perhaps one of the strongest players in an increasingly competitive business.”

“As economic concerns are on the rise, the non-Kroger retailers will emphasize the consumable grocery category as consumers shy away from discretionary purchases,” Russell said. “Kroger gained a degree of market share over the pandemic period and the challenge will be to maintain or grow this share as economic conditions tighten. Data indicates Kroger has a loyal shopper with some indication of market share gains over the past several years. However, compensation and transportation costs remain elevated, impacting both Kroger and the broad retailing players.”
